The differentiation between a classical Wave and an Upper Wave is not easy from satellite imagery alone. There are, however, some hints.
The cloud bulge of an Upper Wave is usually

	less pronounced than

	the same as

	more pronounced than

a Classical Wave. The WV image usually shows a dark area at the upstream part of the Wave which is

	more pronounced

in case of an Upper Wave. In the VIS image, an Upper Wave is accompanied by

cloud compared to a classical Wave.
